Anyone driving a registered vehicle in the state of Florida must carry the states minimum car insurance coverage.
Minimum car insurance coverage is, $10,000 bodily injury for one person, personal injury protection, “PIP” and $10,000 for property damage, property damage liability, PDL.
This minimum car insurance applies even if you are not driving your car in Florida or if your car is not being driven. If your car is registered and you have current tag you must carry the minimum car insurance.
Personal injury protection covers you even if the accident was not your fault. If someone is riding with you in your car and does not have PIP, the PIP will cover his or her injuries. It covers your child, riding a school bus and you if walking, or riding a bicycle and are involved in an accident with a motor vehicle it covers your injuries.
Damages to another car or property that you or another member of your family caused while driving your licensed vehicle is covered by your PDL.
All insurance polices must be obtained through a Florida agent and an insurance company licensed to sell in Florida.
Some drivers are required to carry bodily injury protection also. These usually are required of drivers that have been involved in an accident or who have been convicted of an offense such as driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated.
If you are a licensed driver and have a car registered in the state of Florida, and you do not maintain the required insurance coverage, the Department of Motor Vehicles can suspend your driving privilege, your license tag and registration for up too three years or until you show proof of Florida insurance coverage. A reinstatement fee, $150 up to $500 must be paid and proof of insurance before licenses are reinstated.
If you ride a motorcycle, in the state of Florida, your PIP does not cover you. If you ride with a helmet and your health insurance will cover you, you are not required to purchase PIP. If you ride without a helmet you are required to carry $10,000 PIP. Get an auto insurance quote
